Think Dirty UI/UX Design Internship
From Fall 2021 to Spring 2022, I was a UX Design Intern at Think Dirty app on the Mobile Development team.
As a UX Design Intern, I worked closely with product, engineering, and leadership to develop new personalization features and enhance the intuitiveness of current flows within the Think Dirty app.
Role
Duration
Sep. 2021 - May. 2022
The Think Dirty app, with over 2 million users, provides insights into beauty and personal care product ingredients. Its features include product searches, ingredient ratings, and curated clean shopping options, making it a vital resource for informed and healthier personal care choices.
Our team’s mission is simple yet deeply personal: to improve people’s health by promoting the use of safer daily beauty products. Through collaborating cross-functionally with product and engineering, I helped to create the end-to-end experiences of the latest premium feature – Personalized Ingredient Preferences.

Problem Statement
Navigating through thousands of products with millions of ingredients can be a confusing and rudimentary experience, particularly for individuals with sensitive skin and allergies. How might we filter out products containing unwanted ingredients so users can easily find products they're looking for?
Breaking down the Problem
01
Users get no help at any stage of search. They have to navigate through a long list of products and their respective ingredients to check for possible allergens and unwanted ingredients.
02
Difficulty discovering new products. Simultaneously, users can’t discover new products by active ingredients they want included - such as anti-aging agents.

Personalized Ingredient Preferences
With the overarching problem in mind, I designed a new ingredient preferences feature for the iOS mobile experience. This feature enhances user experience by identifying pre-selected allergens and undesirable ingredients in product views. The goal is to keep users well-informed about product ingredients and alert them when a product contains ingredients they cannot use.

Onboarding
This flow enables users to create a personalized list of ingredient preferences during onboarding. Emphasizing clarity, bright icons with descriptions were consistently displayed throughout the app.

In-App
A key decision I made for ingredient alerts was that the red alert icons for flagged ingredients is displayed regardless of their presence. This decision is rooted in a commitment to prioritize instant recognition, ensuring users can readily identify potential concerns. The challenge was to strike a balance between clarity and visual coherence, aligning with our commitment to transparency and informed decision-making.
What Else Have I Done?…
Shipped full end-to-end flow within a short period, collaborating with cross-functional partners across all stages, from research, design, to execution.
01
Designed and maintained design systems, including the production of new components used across iOS/Android systems.
02
Created strong, coherent integration and defined product framework by utilizing design thinking, evaluating user pain-points, and mapping out end-to-end user journey.

What I’ve Learned
By maintaining a uniform visual style throughout the entire in-app experience, meeting strict time constraints, and collaborating with the engineering team to address technical considerations, I've developed a skill for crafting cohesive and user-centered designs within the practical constraints of the real world.
